Back on eastern time!

Well, as usual, a whole lot has happened since we last wrote...

Our one night stay at the Paris hotel in Vegas was awesome! Nick and Dominique hooked us up with tickets to the Cirque du Soleil Beatles Love show at The Mirage which was totally indescribable. We also lounged by the swanky pool and gambled on slots in the Bellagio and the Paris. To our dismay, we made nothing back, but we only gambled about $15. The next day we set out on a red-eye flight to St. Martin in the French West Indies for our week-long sailing trip with Zach's family.

Joined by Zach's parents and his two brothers and their girlfriends, we sailed through the Carribbean, making stops at Anguilla, St. Barth, Ile Fourche, and Tintamaree. The water was warm and crystal clear, and sometimes filled with baracuda and sea turtles! We sailed, swam, snorkeled, hiked, relaxed, and did a little shopping. The trip felt so luxurious compared to the camping/sleeping in the car, and showering every 4 or 5 days which we've become so accustomed to, so thanks Micky and Bobbie for the pimped out excursion! However, I should mention that the humidity in the Carribbean during this time of year is no joke, and without A/C on board, getting a full night's sleep was, well...difficult and wet more often than not. As the rest of the crew headed to the airport to return to their careers and responsibilities, Zach and I headed to our one-night stay at a beautiful resort hotel in Orient Bay, to enjoy one last night in St. Martin together. Oh, and MTV's Bill Bellamy was everywhere! He was on St. Barth walking through the same streets as us, and then days later, he was sitting on the beach in St. Martin, five chairs away from us. Zach and I were getting pretty sick of all these celebrities following us around.

We flew back into Vegas, praying the whole way that our car was still where we left it, and it was! We stayed the night in a hotel off the strip, and then woke up early the next morning to start making our way back east. We drove for three days on I-40 east, stopping to sleep in Albuquerque and Little Rock, before we finally made it back to North Carolina! Now we're relaxing at Zach's family's lake house for the weekend, doing laundry, taking showers, and recharging our batteries. Eventually we'll make it back up north to Maryland, but until then, we'll be sorting out wedding details and putting off reality down here.

Wow! It's been a while since we've found ourselves in front of a computer. But here we are in Pahrump, Nevada, 67 miles north of Las Vegas! We'll do our best to fill in the past 2 and a half weeks, because we've seen and done a whole lot...

We got a little too comfortable in Seattle, thanks to our amazing hosts Sasha and Tessa, and spent about a week just lounging, eating, running, and visiting Zach's AT friends Nick and Rachel. After leaving Seattle, we headed south to Portland, Oregon (which was an awesome city!), and then slowly worked our way down the Oregon coastline along US-101, camping at beach state parks. The Oregon coast was beautiful, and pretty much looked like New England beaches, except they were about 15 degrees cooler. Zach bought a kite in Newport and that replaced me as his new best friend for most of Oregon.

Once we reached California we camped and hiked through Redwood National Park, and then booked it to San Francisco! We spent the most beautiful day of our trip so far in Sausalito, hanging out at marinas and checking out boats. We toured San Fran by bike, along the bay, and scored a free bottle of wine and some local figs. Next we headed for Yosemite National Park in western California, which was Zach's favorite park. There were raging waterfalls, huge granite walls, cascading green rivers, quiet lagoons, and domes all over the place that provided awesome views of the park. Plus, we saw another black bear, ran into Sasha's friend Heather and got a free dinner and place to stay for a night (thanks Heather!), and hiked parts of the Pacific Crest Trail and the John Muir Trail.

Getting anxious to get to Vegas for our luxurious one night stay at the Paris, thanks to Nick and Dominique, we hightailed it to the desert AKA hell. If you want to know what it feels like to drive through Death Valley on June 30th at 2 pm at an elevation of -290 feet, turn the oven to about 200 degrees and climb inside. Seriously. We sweated for about 4 hours straight, because Zach insisted we leave the AC off and put the windows down to prevent the car from overheating. The wind was gusting at about 15 mph, but don't mistake this for a cool breeze...it felt like a blowdryer set on high hitting you in waves. You get the point.

Now we've got one more day of this infernal heat before heading to Las Vegas, and then St.Maarten for our sailing trip with Zach's family! We hope all is well back home. We're having trouble uploading all of our photos from the last 2 weeks, but hopefully we'll get that taken care of in Vegas tomorrow. Stay tuned...

Heli rides

Olympia was interesting to say the least. We hung out in downtown Olympia quite a bit and also did some hiking in Olympic National Park. The highlight was the helicopter rides with our friend Keith. Check out a couple of the videos below.

We're in Seattle now with our friend Sasha. Tonight we're going to meet up with my friend Nick who I hiked the Appalachian Trail with and tomorrow morning we're going to Pike Place market to check that out. We haven't planned much farther in advance than that but keep checking in with us.

Washington

Whew! Amazing that we're already in Washington state! After leaving Yellowstone National Park, we headed to Bozeman, Montana. One of our favorite stops thus far! Bozeman is a very cool town, with the best co-op I've ever been to (sorry Tidal Creek, but it's true), awesome restaurants, very bike-friendly, and the most warm and helpful people we've met. Then we slowly made our way to Glacier National Park, in the northernmost part of Montana, camping along forest service roads and reservoirs. By the time we made it to Glacier, Nicole developed an awesome cold from camping and hiking in all the cold, wet weather we've had. Of course once we got to Glacier it was once again rainy and cold, so we only spent a day there, checking out all the highlights that were accessible, since so much of the park is still covered in snow.

After almost a week in Montana, we finally left and headed for Washington state, to visit Sasha, Keith and Nick and Rachel. We're currently in Olympia, staying with Keith for a couple days, and then up to Olympic National Park and Seattle for the rest of the week. Check out the new photos!

Buffalo, bears, and moose, oh my!

Since our last post, we've been exploring the wonderful wilderness of Wyoming! After driving through Jackson, we headed for Grand Teton National Park. We spent 3 days and 2 nights backcountry camping, hiking, and biking around the park. The morning after our first night of camping on the shore of Phelps Lake, we stumbled upon a black bear (which wasn't really black at all), eating a moose calf and then taking a nap under a tree. We also saw moose and a ton of yellow-bellied marmots along the way. When the rain finally stopped and the sun came out, we jumped on a chance to bike to Jenny Lake, and then hike a loop trail to our next campsite, at Bradley Lake. The next morning, we woke up early, hiked back to the car, and headed for Yellowstone National Park. Woohoo!

Yellowstone was full of geysers, buffalo, elk, and more rain, unfortunately. Once we arrived in the park, we got a backcountry permit, and then headed for the Old Faithful Lodge, for some hot chili and a view of the geyser. Then we meandered through the park, checking out the colorful pools and thermal spots lining the roads. The plains in the park were covered with more buffalo than we ever imagined - we had several approach the car, and many of them took their time crossing the street or walking right next to the car. All the while Zach was yelling "Tatonka, Tatanka!", from the movie Dances with Wolves. And speaking of which, as we were leaving the park this morning, we took a walk on a boardwalk that paralleled the Madison River, when we spotted a wolf on the other side making its way toward a group of elk.

Now that the sun is finally out, and the temperature might break 60 degrees (for first time since we left Utah), we are leaving Yellowstone for Montana! We plan to spend a couple days wandering around the big sky state before we head up to Glacier National Park.

We love Arches

Wow, it feels like we just flew through Utah. After leaving Colorado we headed for Arches National Park hoping to get a backcountry permit before the visitor center closed. We made it to the park with a few hours of daylight to spare and secured a permit in an isolated area of the park. Ironically, there was one car at the trailhead and it was also from Maryland...strange. We hiked about an hour into one of the many canyons in the area and set up camp on a rock outcrop above the river. Finally, our first night out of the car or the comforts of a bed. We fell asleep to a clear sky and the sound of bats in the canyons.

We woke up (yesterday) at 6:15 to get an early start to the Memorial Day crowds. We hiked back to the car and drove/biked to some of the highlights in the park like Balanced Rock and The Windows but our favorite spot in Arches NP was Delicate Arch. We didn't want to follow the crowds up the trail that takes you directly to Delicate Arch so we opted for a trail that led to a view of the Arch and it was well worth it. Not only did we have the place to ourselves but it also provided for the perfect opportunity to ask Nicole to marry me! She said yes, thankfully, and now we're engaged! The rest of the day was kind of a blur. We eventually made it to Canyonlands National Park but not before stopping at a brewery in Moab, Utah to celebrate. Last night we found a great camp site on the edge of a canyon. We woke up to cattle ranchers asking us if we had seen their cows anywhere. We were apparently in an open range area where cows roam free.

We left Canyonlands this morning and drove through Flaming Gorge in Northeast Utah, and did a short hike to the gorge. We're just north of Flaming Gorge in Wyoming and planning to drive north to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks tomorrow.

Colorful Colorado!

Here we are, in beautiful Breckenridge, Colorado. We had a loooong drive from Chicago, which included a pit stop at the original Field of Dreams (from the movie) in Iowa, and a quick overnight camp at Cody Park in North Platte, Nebraska. Along the way, we saw a ton of wind turbines, a wolf, lots of cows, llamas, several inhumane slaughterhouses, and the Colorado plains. Oh yeah, and we locked our keys in the car when we stopped to use the bathroom in Sterling, Colorado..that was awesome!

After we drove through Denver, we started climbing elevations, and finally reached about 10,500 feet in Breckenridge. I am unfortunately dealing with some off-and-on altitude sickness, which mainly includes headaches and fatigue. We're staying with Zach's friend Kyle McKenzie at an amazing lake house that he's house sitting for. Lucky us! This morning we hiked about 3 miles (and 2,000 feet in elevation) up to Lower Mohawk Lake. It was beautiful, and steep, and the trails were covered in snow, which might be hard to imagine. On the road again

We love Chicago! After 2 days and 3 nights here, we know there's so much more to see, but we've got to keep moving west now or we might never leave. A couple highlights of this trip...we went to the Skydeck on the 103rd floor of the Sears Tower (pretty crazy!), wandered around the Art Institute of Chicago for a couple hours, had dinner in Greektown, toured the huge and beautiful Botanic Gardens, and went to a Cubs game at Wrigley Field! Oh yeah, and sat in CVS for an hour getting Zach steroids for his rampant poison ivy - don't worry, it's under control now. Unfortunately there were no parades going on that we could crash, but I'm pretty sure we did everything else that Ferris did.

Thanks so much to our amazing tour guides and hosts, Mara and Gerri Lane! Now it's time to hit the road and head towards Denver, Colorado! It's a long trip, so we'll probably camp in Nebraska tonight. The car is doing great, but we have yet to name her. Any suggestions?

Chicago

We made it to Chicago last night and are staying with our friend's parents for a couple nights (thanks Hillary!). The drive was perfection. No traffic, quick stops. We saw huge windmills in western Pennsylvania, lots of cows and fields through Ohio and Indiana and miles of power plants along Lake Michigan in Illinois. The Chicago skyline is impressive with the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) dominating. Driving into the city was a breeze thanks to our Garmin Nuvi 265 W GPS (thanks Demetrea and Maria).

The first stretch of our trip (Baltimore-Chicago) took 11.5 hours. Our gas mileage was decent, 25 - 27 miles/gallon but once we take the bikes off the back and put them inside the car, we hope to get 30 miles/gallon.

We're off to try to catch the next train into the city. Talk to yall soon.

And we're off!

It's Monday, May 24th. Zach and I are all packed and ready to hit the road. First stop: Chicago! Thanks to Hillary's generous parents, we'll be starting off our trip in comfort - complete with beds, showers, and hot meals. I see a Cubs game in our near future...maybe a trip to the Art Institute and Sears Tower too. We'll be looking for opportunities to perform "Danke She" in the middle of the city. National Parks Road Trip

Hi all - plans are in motion and our road trip departure date is rapidly approaching. Late May in the desert sounds nice. There will not be an itinerary to be bound to but we will update you on our general course soon. Check in frequently for awesome videos and photos of America's best National Parks.
